Are You Interested In Tapes?
Here at OMGVinyl, we’ve got a relatively new unhealthy obsession. As if buying vinyl (one of the least convenient things on Earth to store/move) wasn’t bad enough, we are now buying cassette tapes again. So we were wondering, are you at all interested in hearing about the occasional must-have psych/drone/ambient tape release? Keep in mind that many of our favorite bands that we cover here (Emeralds, Sun Araw, etc) are also putting out tapes, and that these things are super limited, sometimes sell out very fast, and are extremely inexpensive. If there was a blog like this around when Prurient’s “Cocaine Death” cassette was released, I wouldn’t be crying myself to sleep every night for not having a copy.
well, i still buy tapes and such but i think there are already sites that cover most of this (animalpsi or fangsandarrows and other boards). wouldnt say no though…
i like the fact that this is a site for vinyl only- obviously, it is your site to do with as you will but, cool as some cassettes may be, they ain’t vinyl
some people think the current interest in vinyl is a blip but i gotta say that the interest in cassettes is surely more of a passing fad- much poorer sound quality, smaller artwork than even CDs and not even a beautiful object, in my opinion
this comes from a man who, due to having to attend boarding school as a youngster, bought most of his music on cassette back in the day for the ONLY reason that made sense- portability- they don’t even have that advantage now- i can’t see the reason for them nowadays other than for the ‘more retro than thou’ aspect- am i missing something?

Yeah, I felt that way for a long time too. The thing is, most of the music coming out on tape is so unbelievably lo-fi, it really wouldn’t benefit from a vinyl release. Tapes are kind of a nice way to pick up a limited, often handmade piece of music for $5-$6.
Because I don’t have a turntable in my VW.

Animal Psi totally fills this void.
Yeah, we’d never, ever be able to be as thorough as Animal Psi for tape releases. We were mostly wondering if an Emeralds tape comes out, or there are tapes in the new batch at Not Not Fun, is it worth mentioning?

i just went to animalpsi for the first time and i am bamboozled- i guess i just don’t have the time or the inclination to start afresh on this ocean of underground cassette-based music, let alone the extra cash, regardless of how cheap the individual items are
but i seem to be the only stick in this here section of mud- as long as the coverage of vinyl on this site remains as high as ever, i won’t complain about the odd cassette here and there
isn’t that big of me?!
