Four New Records from Thrill Jockey

There is no better way to start your day than with a whole batch of new records from Chicago’s Thrill Jockey label.  This group of releases is particularly impressive to me, I was pretty blown away by all of them.  First up is “…And Then We Saw Land” by Tunng.  This is a record full of painfully pretty folk songs.  That’s really the only way to describe this stuff, just listen to the clip below, it will win you over.  The packaging for this LP is stunning, as it is housed in a fantastically psychedelic gatefold jacket.  The vinyl is limited to 1,000 copies and costs only $13 at ThrillJockey.com.

Secondly is “Steal Your Face”, a new LP by Mi Ami.  This is loud, noisy, jangly, African-inspired dance-pop.  Infused with elements of dub and other world rhythms, the dance music and noise on this record sounds like it is about to actually jump off the turntable and wreak havoc on your neighborhood, dragging the corpses of those that won’t join the party alongside.  Intense shit, and well worth your $13.  The LP is limited to 1,000 copies and available at ThrillJockey.com.

Third up is “Fussing and Fighting”, the new 12″ EP by Baltimore experimentalist Jason Urick.  The songs here focus more on rhythm and melody than the fierce ambiance of “Husbands”, but they are equally as interesting and rewarding.  I won’t go on too long about this one, as if you are buying experimental records from Thrill Jockey, you already know that you’re getting yourself into an interesting and amazing experience.  The vinyl is limited to 500 copies and only costs $10 at ThrillJockey.com.

The last new record is “In The Fall” by Future Islands.  These guys are probably best known for playing with Dan Deacon when he gets his large ensemble together, but their own music is also beyond fucking cool.  Mixing new-wave electronics with a sound that is more blue-collar and homegrown, this is unlike almost anything else I’ve ever heard before.  I guess it’s almost like throwing Joy Division, a punk band like Against Me!, and Tom Waits into a meat grinder and seeing what falls out the other end.  The 12″ comes on blue vinyl for only $10.  Again, ThrillJockey.com.

  1. The Mi Ami record is kick ass. Don’t really see the African inspired dance pop thing so much though. At least not on this new disc. Some of their beats are not trad pop stuff but that doesn’t make it African dance pop. It’s much harder edged and rooted in art noise to me. I gotta get the vinyl.

  2. Yeah, I guess after listening to older Mi Ami stuff, my ear still hears it, even if less prominent. Shit is rad either way.

  3. Totally digging that Tunng record. Perfect summer album. Sold.

  4. Can’t wait for the new Trans Am. 4/20 can’t come soon enough!
