Top Ten Albums of 2010 by Kyle from Ash Borer

Ash Borer is easily one of the most promising black metal bands of recent memory.  Kyle sent over a list of what kept him going in 2010.

(In No Particular Order):

NightbringerApocalypse Sun
One of the most well thought out, dense, strange, and punishing black metal records of recent memory.

GlossolaliaGold in the Throat
Compilation of demos from pre-2010. This is second only to Arizmenda for my favorite Crepusculo Negro release.

DispiritRehearsal at Oboroten
Not much to be said about this that hasn’t already been said. Outstanding.

Fell VoicesLP/”tour demo”
Getting to hear these songs (among others) played live for 3 weeks was a pleasure.

Knelt RoteInsignificance LP
Unrelenting wall of grind/death/noise. Almost painful at times.

Wolvserpent - Blood Seed LP
This took the tension put in place by the mournful string-heavy drone aspects that I loved on Pussygutt’s “Gathering Strengths” LP, and then breaks it with huge slabs of distortion, feedback, and demonic vocals over the top.

Swans - My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope to the Sky
Not as intense as I was initially led to believe, but still incredible and up to par with the rest of their discography.

Common Eider, King EiderWorn
Beautiful, crushing.

HellHell II
Holds up to the precedent set on Hell I. BG kvlt doing what they do best.

Bastard NoiseA Culture of Monsters
Great to hear them with a more MITB style and a hearty dose of noise and power electronics.

Everything Liz Harris released this year
I believe this is limited to the Hold/Sick 7″ and the Grouper/Roy Montgomery Split, as well as her collaborations with Ilyas Ahmed and Common Eider, King Eider. If there’s more than I’m missing out.
