Tape Tuesday: Million Mists, Spare Death Icon & Golden Retriever
…aka the slow and weird pulsations of the post-rave electronic fallout; wherein we examine musical patterns discovered by the newest decade of halcyon-daze burn-outs. To the point: Brother Raven are the duo of Jamie Potter and Jason E. Anderson; two dudes channeling synth, tape and effects to reaffirm the previously discarded new-age vibrations of the German pioneers and sensibilities of the Western disco dropouts. We’ve covered their vinyl releases before – here I am more interested in each Brother’s solo output as Million Mists and Spare Death Icon respectively. Both have new albums for 2011 on Gift Tapes, and each one meets the highest specifications in regards to music, sound quality, packaging and design. These deserve several flips in your deck, turned up to the highest sustainable volume in order to let the warmth of the magnetic tones truly envelop your dome. You may have a little harder time wrapping your ears around Matt Carlson’s offering for the newest Gift Tape batch. It is a far, far gone piece of electronic experimentation. I’ve been giving much more attention to his Golden Retriever project and their most recent album on Rene Hell’s Agents of Chaos label. Golden Retriever is a duo with Jonathan Sielaff and given the limited availability, you should find a copy of this as soon as possible. The sounds this duo constructs via bass clarinet, synthesizer and effects are totally singular within a scene that releases untold dozens of tapes each week. Get a copy soon at mimaroglumusicsales.com and check out some of the other releases on the Agents of Chaos label. All are amazing exercises in pushing the envelope on modern electronic music, complimented with impeccable design work from Mr. Hell. Totally bangin’ set of tapes.
