Three Lobed Recordings and Divide by Zero Records have teamed up to release “Tennessee And Other Stories…”, the debut solo album from D. Charles Speer & The Helix pianist (plus Jack Rose collaborator), Hans Chew. This album is a honky-tonk journey through the south, not something I would normally be into, but it has something special. There’s a lot of soul here, you can hear that these songs are very personal to Chew. As with pretty much everything Three Lobed releases, this is stop notch, best of genre material. The LP comes on 160 gram vinyl in a nice gatefold for only $15 shipped. Visit DividebyZeroRecords.com or ThreeLobed.com.

Over three years in the making, this album from midwesterner Ryan Davis’ State Champion project is now ready to be savored by the public. Before getting into the music, let me share a bit of the label’s writeup on this release: “Having created a sound that is a product of its upbringing, with Sweetheart of the Rodeo on the radio, Bleach in the tape deck, and a Smog song stuck in its head, State Champion drives through forty minutes of sincerely howled, sloppily executed, stripped down garage-country on its full-length debut.” Basically, that shit is completely spot-on. “Stale Champagne” is drenched with so much more soul than any modern country music, it’s absurd. In the same way that something like Mayer Hawthorne has so much more life than the modern R&B on the radio, this is miles ahead of any “country” you’ll be seeing on CMT anytime soon. Cut with a decidedly alternative edge, this is western music you can actually be proud to listen to, not cowering in fear that someone will discover it in your collection. It is limited to 500 copies on clear vinyl, includes a CD, comes in a beautiful gatefold jacket, and is only $15. The pressing sounds great, and is well worth your dough. Visit SophomoreLoungeRecords.com.

We like Three Lobed Records a lot, and we hope you do too. That being said, this release won’t be for everyone, but it should make some people really happy. Hans Chew is the piano player in D. Charles Speer & The Helix, so you can already imagine that this new 7″ picture disc is a hot slab of deep-fried blown-out boogety. Just listen to the clip below. Like I said, not for everyone, but this label is always digging up interesting tunes. It has an edition of 500, and costs $8 shipped (or $5.50 when added to any other Three Lobed vinyl order). Visit ThreeLobed.com.

This record is so amazingly great, yet so hard to describe in words. Both of us have been eagerly anticipating Animal Hospital’s “Memory” being released on vinyl. In fact, I can’t think of an album I’ve anticipated MORE in recent months. Barge Recordings is out of Brooklyn, while Animal Hospital is the work of Kevin Micka. This hard to define album’s recipe includes hints of drone, folk, psychedelia, and post-rock. Basically, it’s about everything we like in music, all thrown into one bag, then perfectly blended. It is being pressed as a 2xLP on white vinyl with a tiny edition of 350. Highest possible recommendation. Preorder now for $18 at BargeRecordings.com.

The fine folks at Three Lobed Records have two very interesting new releases up for preorder. First up is D. Charles Speer & The Helix “Distillation”. This is a different kind of release for sure, it is pretty much a perfect blend of country and psychedelia. Beautiful Americana flavored stuff here. It will be released in a one-time edition of 900 RTI-pressed LPs with Stoughton gatefold sleeves. You will receive MP3′s of the album, plus if you order before October 23, you’ll have the option of adding a glass-mastered CD of a live set in St. Paul, MN. This one is $19 shipped, and it can be preordered at ThreeLobed.com.

[See post to listen to audio]

The second new release comes from Steve Gunn. “Boerum Palace” is chock full of beautiful acoustic guitar work and quiet vocals, but definitely fits right in with the other music we cover here. Fans of James Blackshaw should probably like this stuff, as Gunn can play with the best of them. Like the other new Three Lobed release, this one is an RTI-pressed LP with a Stoughton gatefold sleeve. It will be pressed in a one-time edition of 800, comes with MP3′s, and allows buyers the option to add a glass-mastered CD of rarities. Same deal, $19 shipped. Preorder at ThreeLobed.com.
