I’ve been really, really excited about the new Black Mountain album, their first two records are in constant rotation on my turntable. ”Wilderness Heart” is a little bit more straightforward rock than their last one, but I still think it’s great. For some reason, “In The Future” always sounded pretty dark and occult to me, this one sounds much less like that for me, even ditching a bit of the heavy psychedelia. Dungen “Skit I Allt” LP

We couldn’t possibly be any more excited for a new album from Sweden’s Dungen. These guys have staked out a unique claim in the modern rock landscape by raining acid-sunshine guitar licks upon all the hip young men in tight jeans and busting out smooth jazz melodies for the ladies. The sensual sounds of the Swedish countryside – album title roughly translates to “Fuck All”. Mountain Man “Made in the Harbor” LP (Plus 10″ EP)

I was just about to write about the new Mountain Man 10″ EP coming out July 20th on Underwater Peoples, but the full-length album that comes out the same day has the same five songs, plus eight more. I’m gonna have to say that the full album is the safer bet, but the EP contains alternate takes (some of which ARE better), so if you become a Moutain Man megafan after reading this, you should probably pick up both. Plus, Underwater Peoples rules. Anyway, Vermont’s Mountain Man is actually three women, Molly Erin Sarle, Alexandra Sauser-Monnig and Amelia Randall Meath. They play beautiful, harmonic folk music, stuff that should appeal to anyone that loved Fleet Foxes or Bon Iver, though this is far more rustic and homemade. I’d be quite surprised if these ladies didn’t blow up pretty big soon, so jump on this train early. Meant to tell you guys about this one a little earlier but seeing as how Blackest Rainbow is now shipping out pre-orders with less than 15 copies left in stock I have pretty much failed all of you occult-folk fanatics (of which there are probably also less than 15). To be honest, I was not able to get my hands on their last release so I could not tell you exactly what is going on with these fellows – but I love their album art and I love the phrase “occult-folk”. The fact that there are only 15 left at the source hopefully means that there are plenty on their way to distros. I guess we will see, Blackest Rainbow releases sure do tend to disappear fast. This material is more dense and less instantly accessible than some of his other work, but it becomes exponentially more rewarding upon repeat listens. Just caught wind of this amazing new record that totally knocked me off my feet. “&hope still” is the new album by Texas one-man-band, Silent Land Time Machine. This is pretty much the most unclassifiable and impossible to pigeonhole piece of music I’ve ever listened to. Layers upon layers of instruments eventually transform these songs into full-on rural outsider barnburning jam sessions. I won’t go on and on about this, as I will only talk in circles about how hard it is to define, but I can tell you that I could not recommend it more enthusiastically. 100% essential. Some LP Reissues from Mexican Summer

Looks like Mexican Summer is rolling out some vinyl reissues, something that I’m not sure they’ve done before. Then again, I’m not sure they’ve had many bands as successful as these before. Looks like the new batch includes new pressings of Pearl Harbour’s “Something About The Chaparrals” (beautiful pop stuff), Real Estate’s “Reality” (sun-drenched psychedelic pop featuring Matt Mondanile of Ducktails on guitar), Kurt Vile’s “God Is Saying This To You” (quite simply one of the best songwriters working today), and Washed Out’s “Life Of Leisure” (the best thing to come out of the glow-fi/chillwave movement). They are all single LPs for $13.73 each. They come out next week and can be preordered at AuralExploits.com.
