Just got two new singles in the mail from Gold Robot Records, I love with this little label is doing. The first is a split from Colossal Yes and The Good Fear, two bands from two different sides of the country. The music is pretty different too, the Colossal Yes side is a recorded-with-one-mic piece of melancholy blues, while The Good Fear bring a really heartfelt, driving rock song on the b-side (the clip below). It’s a 7″ on grey vinyl, has an edition of 500, is beautifully designed, and costs only $5. Visit Gold-Robot.com.

[See post to listen to audio]

The second new single is from Roman Ruins, the solo project of Beach House drummer Graham Hill. What I found here was totally not what I was expecting, two slices of blissed-out synth pop, quite different from the other GRR releases I have run into. Beautiful songs, plus the vinyl sounds great. It comes on orange vinyl, has an edition of 500, and is $5. Again, Gold-Robot.com.

I’ve been really, really excited about the new Black Mountain album, their first two records are in constant rotation on my turntable. ”Wilderness Heart” is a little bit more straightforward rock than their last one, but I still think it’s great. For some reason, “In The Future” always sounded pretty dark and occult to me, this one sounds much less like that for me, even ditching a bit of the heavy psychedelia. That said, it’s completely solid and will likely sneak into my top albums at the end of the year. You can preorder the LP for only $12.50 at Jagjaguwar.

We couldn’t possibly be any more excited for a new album from Sweden’s Dungen. These guys have staked out a unique claim in the modern rock landscape by raining acid-sunshine guitar licks upon all the hip young men in tight jeans and busting out smooth jazz melodies for the ladies. The sensual sounds of the Swedish countryside – album title roughly translates to “Fuck All”. You can listen to a new song at mexicansummer.com, they will be releasing the domestic pressing of this album at some point.

Boris returns with a new 12″ EP for Southern Lord containing three songs fronted by vocalist Ian Astbury of The Cult and (sigh) The Doors of the 21st Century. I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but what was wrong with Takeshi’s vocals? Oh well, at least Wata sings on one song (a cover of a Cult jam). Love Boris, but not sure how I feel about this one – hopefully I will be proved embarrassingly incorrect. Pay thy tithes at the altar of southernlord.net.

Here in small-town Iowa, we once had a heavy band that actually made it out of the area and was heard by a lot of folks (relatively)…that band was Song Of Zarathustra. Makes sense then that Chibalo feels like a special record to me, as the band consists of members of Song of Zarathustra, Book of Dead Names, Killsadie, Red Light Go, etc etc. It’s a bit more rock and roll than previous incarnations, but the same explosive spirit is there. The wonderful Init Records is taking preorders on the vinyl edition which is limited to 300 and costs only $15. Visit my good friends at Init Records.

The brothers Ween continue to paint the town brown with a never ending torrent of vinyl reissues. Coming soon on the Chocodog label (as opposed to the Plain label) is the excellent Quebec from 2003. It’s hard for a band to live up to the expectations set by albums like Pure Guava and Chocolate & Cheese, but Quebec makes a damn fine effort, and comes off sounding like some of the band’s best work. A double LP set on 180 gram vinyl, auralexploits.com has you covered with a $24 pre-order.

Call it throwback metal if you must, but I’d call the musical output of Olympia, Washington’s Christian Mistress an invigorating shot in the arm for a genre that can tend to go stale and flat pretty quickly. There’s certainly more than nostalgia prompting Darkthrone’s Fenriz to name drop the band every chance he gets – these guys (and gal) are ripping out some pretty fresh and satisfyingly chunky metal. The debut LP, Agony & Opium, is now available from phantomcityrecords.com for $12. Insert obligatory remark about feathered hair and jean jacket vests.
