Four New Records on Thrill Jockey

Our favorite label in Chicago has four big releases up for preorder.  The first, and definitely most exciting for us, is “Beyond The 4th Door”, the new album from Eternal Tapestry.  Like their Barn Owl signing, you absolutely have to applaud Thrill Jockey for finding some of the underground’s best bands and making sure more people hear them.  If you’ve been following these guys, you know what you’re in for, some of the world’s best skin-searing psychedelia.  This record is like a thirty-mile walk through the desert on mescaline.  I’ve given it a full digestion, and it’s definitely their best, most fully-realized album yet.  The LP comes in three different colors and costs $15 at ThrillJockey.com.

The second new one is “Peer Amid” from The Skull Defekts.  The hugest news here is their new fifth member, Mr. Daniel Higgs.  His vocals take their droned-out rock to the next level, giving the listener a reason to pay attention and not give into temptation to zone the fuck out.  It’s a very cool record, and the first that this band has hooked me with.  The 45rpm 2xLP is $17 at the same place, ThrillJockey.com.

Their third release is “Double Star” from Rick Rizzo and Tara Key.  Rizzo is the guitarist/vocalist of Eleventh Day Dream, Key is the guitarist/vocalist of Antietam.  They both drop the vocal duties and collaborate on cozy, ring-spun instrumental numbers.  They’ve ditched their punk rock pasts almost entirely here, with beautiful results.  The LP is limited to 500 copies and costs $14, ThrillJockey.com.

The last one, and the one I know the least about, is “The Gathering” by Arbouretum.  This is their fourth album and they play sweet, slow-driving rock.  I won’t go babbling on about something I don’t know too much about, just give it a listen below.  The LP is $14 at ThrillJockey.com.
