We are pretty much constantly blown away by what Thrill Jockey is doing, you should know that by now. They’ve got two even-better-than-usual records out right now, wanted to give the quick heads up. First comes “2013-3102″ from The Skull Defekts. This isn’t your average Skull Defekts record though. In addition to the legendary Daniel Higgs on vocals, they’ve now added fellow Lungfish member Asa Osborne (aka Zomes), creating some kind of head-pummeling supergroup. This band of stone-cold badasses recorded three new songs while out on tour, all of which are lovingly presented on the A-side of this new 12″. The B-side is something else entirely, not sure how they even did this, but it plays backward from the inner-groove out. The record is limited to 1000 copies and costs $13 at ThrillJockey.com.
The second new one is Luke Roberts’ “Big Bells & Dime Songs”. I’ve said this before, but every year, one or two Americana/folk records really grab me by the balls and make it into HEAVY rotation. Last year it was the Hans Chew record. This year I can already tell it will be Luke Roberts’ new one. It is so straight-forward and intimate, I’m pretty blown away. Harvey Milk’s Kyle Spence handled the recording perfectly, this is a Nashville album for the ages. 100% recommended. You’ll like it. Get the LP for $14 at ThrillJockey.com.
