Stereolab “Emperor Tomato Ketchup” 2xLP / “Dots and Loops” 2xLP
The reissue madness continues. Next up from the mysterious 1972 label is two more platters from Stereolab. Emperor Tomato Ketchup is a certified classic, and anybody who owns the single LP pressing knows that this music needs to live and breath across two discs. Along with Dots and Loops, this has been all but impossible to own on vinyl, so any type of reissue is very, very welcome at this point. Check midheaven.com for pre-orders.

Just wondering has anyone heard any of the 1972 Stereolab reissues, worth getting ? or keep my CDs?
Thanks
Will always prefer Dots to Emperor.
@Landingspace:
I can totally vouch for the “Mars…” reissue; sounds phenomenal ! They are NOT re-mastered though, and I believe 1972 hits a bit of controversy as their source materials are usually the CDs, not master tapes or anything (see: Aphex Twin, Selected Ambient, WARP records). So the source is digital.
Still, I only ever had Mars on CD, and I still think the reissue sounds brilliant. But I am also one of those doofuses that wanted this on vinyl regardless (and finally!). Otherwise, the “how necessary” aspect is on you. It’s my understanding that since “The Groop” are such analog purists (with Gane an avid record enthusiast and audiophile like many of us), if it matters to any fans, seeking out original Duophonic pressings are the ideal. I can’t imagine Dots sounding better than the original 2xLP I already have (fortunately).
HOWEVER, the article is right, “Emperor…” NEEDS this 2xLP treatment. I have to turn the volume all the way up to hear the original pressing. Elektra really screwed that up, cramming too much sound on too thin vinyl. Easily the “quietest” vinyl I own
PS:
If it matters, it’s not 180 gram or anything, but in my opinion, solid, and sounds as awesome as the CD (because that was probably the source, for better or for worse). Or maybe I just finally have better speakers than I did 10-20 years ago …
@ pw!
Thanks so much for the feedback, I appreciate your opinion, I definitely would like to own these records on vinyl…might have to take the plunge and see for myself.
Cheers !
Do your homework on these. Not only is it likely that these are CDs pressed to vinyl, but it appears that a licensing loophole was exploited that cuts Stereolab out of the deal. The band didn’t approve of these and won’t see a dime for them. Boooooo.
